Coming to York was a first for me, Lucy asked if Nicki and I fancied York for Sonnys 7th birthday, we all said yeah and I said I'd look up prices and see what sort of money we were looking at just for travel. Looked up the trainline and prices were coming up close to £200😬 travel express coach was £106 which we were going with until I found transpennine express train was cheapest at £100 if booked in advance.
Short walk to the railway museum, lots of old trains to look at, a few that you can board for a closer look. Really good for the train enthusiasts! When we arrived the small play area was open but the learning centre and big play area were closed. The steam train was an experience although not worth the £4pp to go 200meters and back twice, the kids said it would have been more fun to run up and down the walkway that followed the train. The miniature railway was pretty impressive, 2 laps round for about £3 an adult and £2 a child. All the kids were given a free Thomas the tank engine rail safety book on both trains.
When the kids started getting farty we decided to leave to have a walk along the river and go to the dungeons and York Castle. Lucy and Ben took Lili up to the top of the castle as I couldn't-
1) do the steps to the top of the hill
2) go to the top of the tower
After this Nicki took Lili with her to the dungeons and I kept Lottie. Noone was able to get photos inside the dungeon but Lili cried her way through it. As it was getting time to make tracks back to the train station to come home we walked along the river, the geese were so pleasant and chilled out which was a first to see.

Excuse my finger in the bottom left of the photo but the 2 tiny yellow dots just above are Sonny and Lili climbing down the hill.

Couldn't get the video to load so had to upload to YouTube instead.
